Artsy Fartsy Friday-Tree Painting

As I have said before, I have never taken any art classes. So my knowledge on how to draw or paint comes from a mixture of what my mom has taught me as I would do art and projects growing up, and what I learn from doing.
When I decided to start to try to paint, I had no clue what type of painter I was. (I still have no clue, I just know some things I enjoy).

The big question at the beginning of any drawing or painting is what do I draw or paint. For me this is just about the hardest part. I am not good at coming up with what to paint/draw. With painting, the question of what to paint becomes even harder because you have to add in the question, what style of painting do I want to do. If I decide to paint a flower, do I want that flower to be realistic or somewhat abstract? Do I want it to have texture? Do I want the painting to be of just the flower or should I do something in the background? SO many questions, and so many decisions is hard for someone just starting to paint to sort through. This is probably one of the biggest reasons I don't paint more. I simply just don't know what to paint, or where to start.

Before starting my big tree painting, I had started several paintings but had not finished anything.

Enter Myles. He loves it when I paint, and sometimes I thinks he gets more excited about me painting than I do. I love him for that :) Anyways... Myles wanted me to paint him a big painting of a tree, and he said I had to finish it. I drew out some ideas I had, showed him, and he chose one. We then went to hobby lobby and got not one, not two, but three huge canvases. This was both scary and exciting.

When we got them home I started drawing out the design for the tree on the canvas and got started painting. I only knew what I wanted to do for the tree so I started there.

Once the tree was about done, I knew it needed something in the background. I added a different color...

but it still needed more. I didn't know what I should add, so I looked online at paintings for inspiration. I remembered some paintings I had looked at (and LOVED) before online and thought painting a city in the style that artist had done would go perfectly. (I would post the link of this artist's site, but I can not find it.)

After adding hills and the city, I thought the painting still needed something else. I decided to add more detail and texture in the grass. I thought it would be interesting to do a different type of "grass" on each canvas, and I really liked the way it turned out!

So with the grass added and a little more texture/ variety of color in the background, I was finally finished.....I don't ever think I declared it finished, but I haven't done anything else to it in over a year, so it is pretty much finished. However, I do still need to sign it.

From doing this painting, I learned that I really love painting colorful paintings and BIG paintings. Kids love my tree painting. Some of my favorite compliments on it have come from kids. Eli has also always loved the tree painting. When we were living in college station, we had it hanging over the dresser we used for his changing table. He would always look at it while getting dressed or his diaper changed.

The painting has also made a fun backdrop for taking pictures of Eli. The picture below, we used on Thank you cards. (Many of which I still have not mailed out, sorry!)

Now the tree painting has a home in our hallway. I really love it there. Eli still looks at it when we are walking through the hall, sometimes I stop and let him get a good long look :) I am glad he likes it.

I hope your Friday is Artsy Fartsy!

Artsy Fartsy Friday- Home

We have recently moved, and therefore we have been doing a lot of home renovation. We bit off quite a lot, so it is going to take a while before we are all done.  One thing that is finished (For now at least...I think) and that I am loving is our gray hallway, which is now home to some of my artwork. It is nice having space to hang it!

We chose to paint the hallway gray so there would be a neutral background for all the colors in the artwork to pop. We also wanted a color that would match with a variety of pieces. I am happy with how it turned out!

I have introduced 2 of the pieces in the hallway, the "i love you" hands and the purple valentine painting, but I haven't introduced the big tree painting. I will have to do that soon :)

Happy Friday!

Eli is 3 Months Old!

Yesterday, Eli turned 3 months old!
He had a big day!

He helped supervise everyone painting,

Chewed on his fingers,

 Played with a fun quilt,

(Peek-a-boo)

Played with mommy,

Chewed on his fingers some more,

And...........
Laughed for the first time!!!!!!

These past 3 months have been amazing with you Eli! You are such a sweet boy! You smile all the time and are a joy to everyone around you! You are growing so fast and it is fun to watch you learn to do new things.

Right now you love to be in on the action. When we eat dinner you love to sit in Daddy's lap and watch everyone (while you are licking your lips). We think you are going to really enjoy eating big people food when the time comes!

You aren't too keen on toys yet, you would rather be watching everyone to see what they are doing. And we have been doing a lot lately! Daddy graduated from nursing school a couple weeks ago (WHOOP!!!!!), and we pack up all the stuff in our tiny apartment in College Station and moved to Liberty CIty. You did great with your first move!

You really love to look at art and out windows. You are a great sleeper, just as you have always been, and we are sooooo thankful for that! Also, you love to lick anything that comes close to your tongue, and you love to chew on your fingers and fists....and any other fingers that are offered to you (Daddy is always nice to share his fingers).

You try hard to scoot around and you do a pretty good job at it! You can roll over by getting your little feet under you and pushing off. Mommy and Daddy learned that you were quite good at doing this the hard way....yep you rolled off the ottoman! Oopsie! Thankfully you were just fine, it was pretty low to the ground and the carpet was a nice soft landing. Needless to say, no more napping on things you could roll off once you woke up!

You laughed for the first time yesterday while we were playing and it was so cute! It was just a little giggle, but so precious! I called Daddy right away to come over and watch you laugh. So fun! Now we are constantly trying to get you to laugh again by tickling and playing with you. Every once and a while you will let a little laugh slip out. :)

We love you soo much little bug! We could not imagine life without you now! The past 3 months have flown by, yet it seems like you have been here forever! We love love love you!!!

Eli David Adamson

On March, 2 2011, our sweet Eli finally arrived!

He was born at 8:01 pm. Weighed 8lbs, 7oz and was........18, no 19, ummmm we still are not quite sure how many inches long he was when he was born. But we will go with 19.

The birth story!

Eli was due, March 8. Around 37-38 weeks along my bp was starting to get a little high, so my doctor just told me to keep an eye on it. Having a skilled nursing student for a husband this was no problem. My bp would be high when I had been up moving around, but then when I sat down for a while it would go back down. Because it would go back down, it wasn't considered a problem. By week 39 my bp continued to be high and was even getting over the numbers I was told to watch out for.

On Sunday, February 27, we got back from church and I was sitting down watching some award show and I started to get a headache. My doctor had told me to let her know if I started to get headaches, so I figured I should have Myles check my bp and see where it was at. It was over the numbers I had been given to look out for so I laid down for a while and had Myles check it again. It was still over the numbers so we called the L&D nurses to see what we should do. They told us to go ahead and come on in to the hospital. We got there and the first time they took my bp it was high, but then as I laid there for longer it began to go down and we were sent back home.

I stayed home from work Monday, to see if that would help my bp stay down for my next appointment.

I had my next appointment with my OB Dr. on Tuesday, March 1. Again my bp was high. She saw no reason to have me wait a week on bed rest and decided to go ahead and induce, which I was all for! My Dr. was the on call Dr. for the following day, so it would work out great! I left excited that I would soon be meeting my precious little boy!

I left my appointment made phone calls, and then went to work to gather up my things!

They rest of the day I spent getting everything ready and clean for Eli to come home. Then we spent the evening with our very special friends, the Feldmans, eating pizza rolls and talking about the day to come.

We were called by the L&D nurses at 2:15am...yes AM and told us we could come on in to be induced! We made it there by about 3:15am and I was started on cytotec. We just hung out/ slept until my Dr. came in for the day. When she got there she started me on pitocin, which move my labor along and increase my contractions. She also went ahead and broke my water, which I have to say was the most painful part of the whole day....mainly because it wasn't too long before I got an epidural. It was great! I would highly recommend it if you find yourself in labor!

Things progressed slowly throughout the day. Myles and I were kept company by both of our mothers. I would sleep on and off through the day because I knew that soon I would be not getting much sleep!

My dad arrived around 4:30pm and we all made predictions about when Eli would come and how much he would weigh and how long he would be.

Around 7:45pm, my Dr. came in to check on me and cleared everyone out. It was time to push! Myles did a great job coaching and encouraging me. I was determined to just get labor over with as soon as possible so I put my game face on, and Eli was born at 8:01pm!

Eli was bright eyed from birth! Such a sweet, precious, and cute baby! Myles and I had our moment with him and I started learning how to feed him for a few minutes before we invited everyone in to see our new little bundle of joy!

Since my dad won the closest arrival time for Eli we decided he could hold Eli first. And of course, my dad's first conversation with Eli was...."Can you say deer?" "Big buck?" Eli is going to loving hunting with his grandpa!

Sweet boy!

All of the nurses commented on how alert Eli was, how great his personality and temperament was, and of course how cute he was!

We are so thankful for such a great labor and delivery. Everything really went smoothly which was a blessing!

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Ketchup?

So....wow.

It has been a while. You would think one would definitely blog through some of the most amazing, life changing months of their life...but nope, I sure didn't.  I would say I feel bad for not doing it, but I really don't because I have been busy soaking up every minute!

I have taken time to adjust to a new life and get the hang of it, and am now ready to hit the record button. Though I did not blog through the last 3 months, I do want to take the time to record the awesome events that have taken place, before they leave my memory.

So blog....lets catch up!
